What kind of aquatic life can you expect to see in Machalilla National Park?

Diving around Puerto Lopez is considered as one of the best dive spots in all South America. The reason is Giant Manta Rays and Humpback Whales. Between the months of June to October these magnificent creatures seek the waters around Puerto Lopez and Isla de la Plata to mate and give birth to their young.

Furthermore, common sightings in the Machalilla National Park are pacific angel fish, surgeon fish, triggerfish,  three-stripe butterfly fish, parrot fish, black drum fish, puffer fish, trumpet fish, and sergeant fish – the list goes on!

And let’s not forget about the majestic sea turtles that roam the waters of the Machalilla National Park. Here you can encounter hawksbill turtles, green turtles, olive ridleys, and leatherback turtles. With its protected areas, the Machalilla National Park provides important nesting grounds for these magnificent creatures.

You can also encounter lobsters, corals, octopuses, starfish, eagle rays, guitar sharks, moray eels, and many more.

What is the best season to dive in Puerto Lopez?

Scuba diving around Puerto Lopez is worth it throughout the whole year. While the months between June and October offer sightings of Giant Manta Rays and Humpback Whales, the months between November and May offer calmer and warmer waters. During this time the sea is usually also calmer around Isla de la Plata, making for more comfortable and enjoyable diving experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Diving is a safe recreational activity as long as you follow the rules and regulations recommended by dive schools and dive instructors. Don’t worry we will make sure you know all rules of scuba diving before going for a dive. Our instructors will always be near you to assist in any kind of situation.

We accept all active and recreational professional level diving certifications. E.g.: PSS, PADI, CMAS, SSI, BSAC, SDI, NAUI, RAID, etc.

Our instructors are PADI and PSS certified instructors. You can freely decide in which organization you want your certification. If in doubt, feel free to contact us.

The minimum age is 10 years old.

Between the ages of 10-11 children need to be accompanied by a parent guardian or PADI Professional. Maximum depth is restricted to 12 m/40 ft.

Between the ages of 12-14 children must dive with a certified adult.

If you are interested in scuba diving, but are still not sure if you will like it then don’t hesitate to talk to us. We are happy to explain everything about scuba diving and remove all doubts you might have.

Short answer: Giant Manta Rays. Recent research estimates the area around Isla de la Plata to be the home to the largest manta ray population in the world.

We can also find a variety of schools of fish, green and hawksbill turtles, lobsters, octopus, seahorses, eagle rays, coral reefs, hard and soft coral.

Occasionally if we are very lucky we can also observe species such as tropical whales, dolphins, whale sharks, mola mola, sea lions, orcas, and sharks.

Additionally, the different types of underwater topography makes each dive site on Isla de la Plata unique.

Yes! Our boats have first-aid-kits on board in case of any emergency. All of our crew members is trained to offer immediate first-aid assistance during emergencies.

Yes! Your safety and comfort is very important to us. We always carry Emergency Oxygen on our boat dives and our staff is trained in the use of Emergency Oxygen.

We provide service in both, Spanish and English.

We strongly recommend to make your reservation in advance as the regulations of the Machalilla National Park restrict the maximum number of passengers per tour.

Sure! In any case of dietary restrictions or allergies we will provide you with a personalized menu. Please mention your dietary restriction in your reservation!

Many of our activities are suitable for families with children. Please get in contact with us, so we can arrange the perfect itinerary for you and your family.

In case of early reservations: 50% has to be deposited one month before the tour. The remaining 50% are due, 15 days before the tour.

In case of last minute offers (less than 15 days): 100% payment necessary at time of booking to reserve your spot.

Cancellations:

If you cancel 15 days before your first tour, we refund 100% of your payment (minus possible bank charges).

If you cancel between 14 days and 48 hours before your first tour, we refund 50% of your payment (minus possible bank charges).

For cancellations less than 48 hours before your first tour we cannot make any refund.

If you book multiple tours with us or book for a large group you can get in contact with us to check if you are eligible for a discount.

We accept cash payments, bank transfer and credit card payments.
